Mission Trip to Kiln, Mississippi 2006
The Importance of Missions
At the heart of the Bible, which means at the
heart of God, is mission. Mission is not just one program among many
others in the life of faith. Mission is the life of faith. Mission is not
then just something we do but describes who we are in the transformed life
Jesus Christ offers us: we are a people with mission, on mission, and for
mission. Therefore, reaching out to our neighbor across the street or
across the world in the name of Jesus is the essence of the Christian
life. At St. John, we understand this mission twofold: (1) Mission
involves centrally the sharing (witnessing) of the story of the life,
death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ for the salvation of the world
with those who have not heard this news or who have heard it but have not
accepted it. God wants everyone to know and receive with faith personally
this good news! (2) Mission also includes the hands-on help in Christ’s
name that we are called to give to those in need. Providing for those
without proper food, water, medical attention, clothing, and all the other
basic necessities of life is God’s expectation of us. However, as we give
to others, we receive many more blessings in return. Finally, we further
understand that mission must be relational and offered with genuine
commitment in love and truth. So we are endeavoring to establish long term
mission work among the people and church of Nicaragua and to walk
alongside the orphaned children of Zambia. Of course, we also engage in
many, many local mission opportunities. After all, mission is the mission
of every Christian!
