The LuCom Ministry meets quarterly and is an
organization of area Lutheran Churches working together in a cooperative
ministry to accomplish as a group what could not be accomplished by
individual churches including St. John.
Programs of the LuCom
Ministry
Campership
For 30 years, area Lutheran churches contribute
to a goal of providing 36 disadvantaged children with a week-long
Christian environment at Camp Caroline Furnace. LuCoM pays all expenses
(about $12,000) and provides transportation, clothing, Bibles,
flashlights, insect repellant, and duffel bags.
Habitat for Humanity
LuCom churches, in partnership with Thrivent,
sponsor the construction of Habitat Homes in the Roanoke valley. Some
of the funds are generated from material contributions and donations of
labor at the Habitat store. LuCom churches also coordinate volunteer
labor tasks and serve lunches to the workers.
Chrismon Tree
Lovingly and skillfully, many of LuCoM’s people
made symbols of Christianity to adorn our tree in the Festival of Trees,
held annually in downtown Roanoke. This is a striking witness to the
true meaning of Christmas. We were the first with a Chrismon tree at
the Festival of Trees, but others have now joined in with religious
themes celebrating the true meaning of the Christmas season.
Social Ministry
The programs we support are: the Institutional
Chaplaincy (Prison Ministry), The Rescue Mission, RAM house, Pastoral
Counseling Center, and the Interfaith Hospitality Network.
Support Grant Program
LuCoM has a grant program which will support a
Church activity offered in conjunction with other LuCoM churches in the
valley.
Roanoke Area Lutheran Youth (RALY)
LuCoM sponsors Roanoke Area Lutheran Youth (RALY) which brings
together the youth of the member churches for activities and Christian
enrichment.
