In the Beginning...
It starts with the Inquirers’ Seminar, held on a Saturday morning in the Fellowship Hall.
Daycare is provided upon request.
The group is led through an introduction, a brief history of Christianity, a
look at the beginnings of the Lutheran tradition, a history of Lutherans in
America, a trip to our sanctuary to help better understand how its design is
shaped by our faith, and a time of questions and answers. Your family will receive a notebook with materials about Lutheran
Christianity and St. John. You have an opportunity to walk through that notebook with the
Minister of Congregational Life sharing information about our congregation and the
process of becoming a member.
Deciding
to Join
Each
person attending the seminar is asked to inform us of their intention to join by
the next week for that induction period. If they do intend to join, we then assign a sponsor to represent
and assist the family with any questions or concerns they may have
throughout their membership with St. John.
Join
us for Dinner...
On the
Thursday before new members join, a New Members' potluck supper is held in honor of the families that do plan to join the following Sunday. New member families, sponsor families, members of Council, our ministry team
leaders, and anyone else in the congregation that would like to be there to
welcome the new members come together for dinner and to get to know each other.
Your Special Sunday...
The day you are received into membership, the Minister of Congregational Life will meet with you and your family
prior to worship and present the family with a “new member bag” with some
small welcome gifts and more information about St. John. In
addition, you and your sponsor/s will be asked to come forward during the
worship service you attend. You will participate in a brief
reception of members, which will be printed in the bulletin.
After
you Join....
After you join,
your sponsor will continue to be both a friend and a resource for you. As
soon as one is available, you will be connected with a Place Minister who will be a friend and resource as well. Our
Minister of Congregational Life will be an ongoing resource for you and will answer questions &
provide information about the ministries and life of St. John. Should you
have any questions about anything connected with St. John, always feel free to
call 774-0712. Plan to be a part of the next new member "Welcome
Dinner" to be held about three months after yours to welcome our newest
brothers and sisters in Christ. You can help to keep the process rolling
for the sake of those who come after you!
