The Beginning
Our
first meeting took place on April 6, 2000 in the Fellowship Hall. The building committee was challenged to let St. John’s ministries
dictate the building expansion. Pastor Mark also urged us to make every room multipurpose. We put together a survey to give to the congregation. The results of the survey helped direct us into the actual design of the
building project. The areas seen as the most important to the congregation were the
following: Sunday School classrooms; expanded Fellowship Hall; Youth Needs; and a
larger Narthex.
Planning
Over the next several months, the building team assembled into
subcommittees and gathered more information. The committee interviewed three architectural firms and then unanimously
agreed to hire Hughes & Associates. Hughes recommended that we use the "team-build" approach to
building. We hired Bob Price as the Contractor and we moved forward with the design
concept.
Obtaining More Land
From
our first meeting, we realized the importance of additional land. It was brought to our attention that a house on Merriman Road that
borders our church property was empty. Gary Metz and Bill Mangus immediately began studying the possibility of
purchasing this land which we now own.
The house was in need of so much repair that it has been demolished. The land will provide us approximately 89 additional parking lots and a
rear entrance to the Great Room.
Fundraising
The results of the fundraising campaign have allowed our church to move
forward with the building expansion in phases. We are currently planning to build the Great Room and the new educational
wing with a basement for the youth ministry. We pray the expanded facility will enable us to expand our outreach of the Gospel to all people.
